Mexico City’s cocktail scene is alive and thriving. The talent behind the hands pouring each ingredient has made it globally notable as it scored 4 bars on the list of The 50 Best Bars in the world in 2023 by discovering flavors, mixing unexpected ingredients, pushing limits and, crafting an experience sip by sip.

The global recognition of The World’s 50 Best Bars list is a testament to Mexico City’s redefining the cocktail experience. Compiled from the votes of The World’s 50 Best Bars Academy, this annual list serves as an international guide to the crème de la crème of bars and drinking destinations. The revelation of the 2023 edition, held at Pasir Panjang Power Station in Singapore last October 17th, marked a celebration of excellence in mixology.

While number one was granted to Sips at Barcelona, CDMX makes four notable appearances on the list, showcasing the dynamic developments occurring in the Mexican bar scene. Other noteworthy shoutouts include New York, Paris, Buenos Aires, Oslo, Singapore, Lima and Rome; you can check out the complete list here

Handshake Speakeasy - Number 3 on the list: Located in the heart of Mexico City's Colonia Juárez neighborhood,  this bar is known for its innovative approach to mixology. Eric van Beek, bar director at Handshake Speakeasy, utilizes molecular mixology to craft a menu that appears classic at first glance but surprises the palate with layers of unexpected flavors.

From the Strawberry Pancake to the Banana Split, the cocktail menu reads like a dessert lover's dream. A Lego-inspired chocolate filled with banana cream, showcases the playful and creative spirit that defines this establishment.

Location: C. Amberes 65, Juárez, Cuauhtémoc, 06600 Mexico City, Mexico.

7 Licorería Limantour - Number 7 on the list: In only 14 years, Licorería Limantour has become one of the most innovative bars in Mexico City. Their drinks, which have now become iconic, are creative and original. Visitors can find a Fluffy Paloma, Margarita al Pastor, or the bar's latest menu, Ida y Vuelta, draws on native Oaxacan ingredients with the mezcal milk punch Rosita de Cacao, a favorite with regulars.

Location: Av. Álvaro Obregón 106, Roma Nte., Cuauhtémoc, 06700 Mexico City, Mexico

Hanky Panky Bar - Number 22 on the list: The bar initially opened as a secret amongst friends but thanks to owner Walter Meyenberg incredible creations it gained popularity until the point customers came on their own. The entrance is interesting though, as it's purposely hidden behind a taco vendor, which is also worth trying.

Besides cocktails, Hanky Panky also offers a selection of food options cooked with the highest care and quality of ingredients.

Location: Turín 52, Juárez, Cuauhtémoc, 06600 Mexico City, Mexico

Baltra Bar - Number 45 on the list: With a laidback and cozy atmosphere, Baltra Bar is a neighborhood bar that makes clients feel welcome. Besides the hospitality, the bar, which was created by Jose Luis León, who is also behind Licorería Limantour, offers busy Martini Tuesday and exciting drinks such as Santa Elena made by Matusalem 15-year-old rum, red wine, clove and tamarind cordial, cherry syrup, and lemon juice; or Kume made by Vodka, Vermouth, raspberry, matcha, and lime juice.
