Benito Juarez was born in Oaxaca on March 21, 1806, his parents were farmers belonging to the Zapotec indigenous ethnic group. Benito Juárez ventured into politics in 1831 when he was elected as a councilor of the Oaxaca City Council. Two years later, in 1833, he rose to become a deputy, and in 1847 he assumed the position of governor of Oaxaca.
Throughout his career, Juárez held the presidency on several occasions, the first being in 1858. His last presidential term ended with his death in 1872.
During his government, he promoted important liberal reforms that left a mark on the history of Mexico. One of the most notable was the separation of political and religious power, followed by the expropriation of ecclesiastical property.
Juárez's famous phrase stands out: "Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace," pronounced in 1867 when the Republic triumphed over the Second Mexican Empire.
This statement has sparked debate, as some critics suggest that Juárez may have been inspired by the German philosopher Immanuel Kant, specifically in his work "Perpetual Peace". Kant reflects on the importance of moral duty and respect for the concept of law to achieve peace both nationally and internationally.
Although direct plagiarism cannot be asserted, it can be argued that Juárez was somehow influenced by Kant's thinking. The proximity of his collaborators, such as Melchor Ocampo, to the enlightened ideas of Europe, suggests the possibility that Juárez was familiar with the German philosopher's thinking.
