Whether you decide to spend a day at the Frida Kahlo Museum in Coyoacan, visit neo-baroque Palacio de Bellas Artes, head to the ultra-modern Museo Soumaya, visit the Anthropology Museum and check out Aztec artifacts, or spend time at a local food and art market, Mexico City has it all, which is why it was named the number one city in the world for culture, according to Time Out Magazine.
With music festivals all year long for all types of tastes –from the widely known Corona Capital, Vive Latino, Ceremonia, Electric Daisy Carnival– Mexico City stands proud as a cosmopolitan capital that offers a variety in the cultural scene.
Mexico City actually has 185 museums, making it one of the top cities with most museums in the world, and they can be any type you can think off: from a chocolate museum, to science and arts, to tequila or mezcal museum, popular art; to Diego Rivera, Luis Barragán, Franz Mayer, Museo Jumex, Soumaya, and Contemporary art, just to name a few.
CDMX, as it is also commonly referred to, also has theaters, concert halls, and two Cinetecas that show less commercial and more artistic, foreign or experimental movies, which is why it outcame others such as Prague, Cape Town, Buenos Aires, Athens and more.
To find out which are the best cities for art and culture as of October 2023, Time Out asked over 21,000 city travelers for best cultural venues, experiences, quality and affordability.
“What captivates me most is the diversity and vitality of the art scene”, says Mauricio Nava, editor at Time Out Mexico City. “One of my favorite places is Kurimanzutto in San Miguel Chapultepec, a scene of contemporary and avant-garde art – but the Frida Kahlo Museum, which offers a unique insight into the life and work of the iconic artist, holds a special place in the city’s cultural fabric. In addition, the Festival del Centro is a renowned event that combines music, theater and dance from around the world. CDMX is always redefining the boundaries of creativity, and that's what makes it so vibrant.”
The complete list:
1.- Mexico City
2.- Prague
3.- Cape Town
4.- Buenos Aires
5.- Athens
6.- Edinburgh
7.- Vienna
8.- Madrid
9.- Florence
10.- Melbourne
